Key Light:

It is also called as a main light, and is usually placed on one side of the face of the subject, higher than eye level. It is the brightest light in the three-pointing plan.

Fill Light

It is placed opposite to the key light and used for softening or filling the shadows on the opposite side of the subject's face. Brightness of this light is between 1/3 and 1/4 as compared to the key light. It is also expressed as a ratio of 3:1 or 4:1.

Back Light

It is also called as hair light or rim light. It is placed behind the subject, often higher than the Fill light or Key light. It provides separation of the subject from the background by highlighting the hair and shoulders of the subject.
