Still Life Photography Equipments

Still life photography is about clicking the images of unmoving objects. This photography is like a painting in which you have to start with an empty canvas and build up the subject matter from scratch. The success of still life images depends upon your creativity and imagination.

There are various ways by which you can approach still life photography; the one you choose depends upon the equipments, your dedication, and the result you wish to produce. Household items can be used as aid in your still life photography; such as a bowl of vegetables, fruits, artist's paints, brushes and palette. Popular examples include ideal subjects like stamps, coins, old bottles, thimbles, postcards and teapots. You could devise a theme, such as the Swinging Sixties, Christmas, a specific shape or your favourite color.

Cameras and Equipments:

You can use a DSLR or compact camera for still life photography. In terms of lenses, a 35-70 mm zoom or 50 mm standard will be the best choice because you will have the control to move as far as away or as close to the set-up. A telephoto lens of 85 or 100 mm can also be used for some shots. Avoid using wide-angle lenses as they exaggerate perspective and distort shapes. Get a tripod, reflectors, and a cable release. Filters are used to add creative effects.

Lighting the set up area is the most important part of still life photography. The lighting in still life photography focuses on spotlighting the object or product which you are photographing(,) to give it a better perspective. If you are a beginner, try mimicking the lighting techniques of other photographers until you are comfortable enough to light your set up.

Still life photography uses different stages and settings to photograph the objects. As the natural setting of the object is not helpful in emphasizing a certain feature about the object, photographers have to make a stage where the object can be placed in. Many times the set up is just a simple white or black backdrop. If you are trying to create a set up for still photography for the first time, starting with a backdrop is the best option.

If you are beginner, join a class at local photography or art studio to familiarize yourself with basic photography techniques so that you can produce the best result when you take your own photographs.
