Super zoom cameras like Fujifilm FinePix HS20EXR and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 are chosen by some professional photographers as it allows capturing images without the use of teleconverter.
Many birds are very shy and for capturing them one will require at least a 300mm lens. Many photographers go for 400mm f/5.6 lens as it is suited for the situation. A telephoto lens is an important equipment for bird photography when DSLR cameras are used. A 840mm f/5.6 lens is used with 2x teleconverter for small and far away subjects. Some telephoto lens have image stabilization feature reducing the effect of shaky hands when tripod is not used. Ultrasonic motor lens has higher quality glass than others and due to auto focusing motor, focusing tends to be accurate and quick.
Teleconverters like Canon Extender EF 2x II and Canon Extender EF 1.4x II are recommended by bird photographers for high quality images. Camera equipment that can prove important for bird photography is a remote shutter release which can be connected to the camera through a cable. Now some cameras are available that already includes remote shutter release.
Many photographers utilize external flash unit to lighten up the shadows which is technically called ‘fill flash’. Canon Speedlight 580 EX II is an external flash unit that is suggested by many professional photographers. Outdoor flash photography eats maximum battery life of the DSLR’s. An external battery pack can be used which will increase the power of the DSLR cameras.
One should go for a tripod that can easily carry the weight of the camera being used and even the attached teleconverter lens. The tripod should be easy to carry and quick to set up. Pistol grip ball head helps to point the camera and trigger the photograph within seconds. The ball head turns in any direction which makes it comfortable for the photographers to shoot.
