Many of us have pets in our homes and we love to photograph them. Cats and dogs, kittens and puppies are photographic naturals. But, photographing them is not easy as they don't pose for the photograph.
Some pets seem to be extremely camera shy, while some others enjoy being photographed. Take some time to prepare for photographing your pet as it can be a rewarding experience. By using good photographic techniques, you can always produce good quality pet photographs. Pets are unpredictable and have a tempting charm.
Cameras and Equipments:
There are variety of different models and brands available in the market. The best way to choose the camera is to ask yourselves as to what type of pictures you will take. Investing in a good DSLR camera like a Nikon, Pentad, Canon or Sony can be the best to photograph your pet. You can also use a digital SLR camera that might cost between $200 to $1000 depending on their type.
Try to use natural light while photographing your pet. Avoid using flash as they can make the eye of your pet appear red and sometimes may frighten the pet. Take the pet out of the house, or place them by a large window. If you want to use flash, try to use an off camera flash so that it doesn't reflect from the eye of your pet. You can take great images indoors with a perfect lighting setup. A basic lighting setup might include a lamp with the removed shade, or multiple desk or household lamps. If you want to include more professional lighting kit, but don't have money, you can use clamp lights and florescent lights which are easily available at $10 each. A professional lighting setup would include a back light; fill light and a key light. The key light is the brightest light and is placed in front and on one side of pets pointing directly to them. The fill light is less bright as compared to the key light and is placed to another side of pet. A back light is placed behind a pet, giving a depth to and separating the pet from the background.
