Wildlife photography, the name itself gives an idea that it’s an act of taking wildlife photographs. It is considered as one of the most challenging and dangerous form(s) of photography.
The wildlife photographer must have some knowledge about the animals, he wants to capture in his camera. This is because the actions of the animals are not predictable and knowing about them will help the photographer to a great extent. Sanctuaries, forests and national parks are the best places for wildlife photography. Perfect wildlife pictures are possible only if one uses special cameras and equipments.
Cameras and equipments:
Wildlife photography requires quick action shots which is possible only with fast DSLR’s with high frame rate. Basic DSLR’s have an average of 3 frames per second (fps) which is quite enough for action shots but their buffers are small. Canon EOS 50D with 6.3 fps is one of the best cameras that can be used by wildlife photographers. This camera has various shooting modes, LCD screen, pop – up flash and is 15.1 megapixel camera. The LCD screen is used as a viewfinder as the camera provides a Live View to the photographer. Some other cameras that are suited for wildlife photography are Canon EOS 1D Mark III, Nikon D300, Pentax K-7, Sony a700 or Olympus E-3.
Canon and Nikon have wide variety of lenses which range from wide angles to fast and long telephotos. Canon 400mm F5.6L USM and Sigma 180mm f3.5DG HSM macro are the lenses that have good contrast and image quality and are used in wildlife photography. Sigma 1.4x and 2.0 teleconverter, both works good these lenses.
Manfrotto 055ProB tripod with junior geared head is basically used by photographers during wildlife photography. Cobra tripod and Manfrotto 680 Monopod are used, depending on the choice. A Canon 430EX Flash Gun is very useful that will give the best shot when the natural light is dim. A remote trigger is something essential that will allow long distance shoots and which keeps one safe from dangerous animals.
Wildlife photography requires some more equipments which are, Scandisk Extreme III/IV 4GB Compact flash cards, Wimberly Plamps , Tamrac Adventure 7 backpack, remote shutter release and portable 12” reflectors.
