forensic-_photography-_equiForensic Photography, also referred as forensic imaging or crime scene photography, is not practiced for fun, but is a serious business. Forensic photography is an art, used to document crime scenes or exactly replicate the crime and accident scenes to preserve the evidence.

This type of photography deals with every aspect from imaging a dead body to a damaged bumper from accident scene. These photographs are used to lead an investigation and also act as proof for the judiciary. Basically, forensic photography is a process of collecting evidence from the scene where crime has been committed. The photographs are used for presentations in court, related websites and even prove extremely helpful while training. It is said that early detectives used to sketch the crime scene.

Cameras and Equipments:

While selecting a camera for forensic photography, always consider a camera that will offer a manual mode. One can use a DSLR with APS-C sensor with around 18mm wide angle lens, which is commonly preferred. A camera for crime scene photography should have the minimum chip size of APS-C with RAW format. Nikon D7000 is a DSLR that stands apart from other cameras for forensic photography. Nikon D3 and D3x DSLR’s were commonly used and are still remaining a part of forensic photography.

Many lenses are used to produce excellent crime scene photographs. It is suggested by experts that always go for a lens with largest lens opening like 1.8 or 2.8 F.  Prime lenses ranging from 35mm to 105mm are important for crime scene photography. A macro lens is able to photograph subjects in a 1:1 ratio and can provide fixed length.

An external source of light is absolutely necessary for both, indoor and outdoor shootings. Flash or strobe are the external lights that are used for forensic photography. Today’s digital cameras work with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that are better than the older rechargeable ones.

Many crime scenes will have no or low light circumstances where the photographer has to click timed exposures. For such situations, tripod is compulsory to take clear images. Latest DSLR’s use both secure digital card and compact card which can shoot hundreds of pictures from a crime scene. Wireless remote and camera cleaning kit are other important camera equipments for forensic photography. Red, yellow, orange and UV filters are used for macro lens.
